7 years! We’ve been married 7 years today! Here’s a snap from our wedding day & swipe to see some from the dating days!! 🤭💓🥰😊️😋😍 Ahhhh I thought we weren’t even that old rn but wow this trip down memory lane snapped me into reality! Is it safe to say that every baby you have adds 5 years on a girl? 🥴😋😝🤪 • Anyway, to set the dark and dreary scene, Christmas Day 9 years ago in Minnesota... it was the first Christmas with a broken family after just a really really tough year and I woke up totally lonely, depressed and devastated. A cousin was in town for the holiday, had no idea of my state, but called and asked where I was and begged me to come hang out with him and some friends. Thanks be to God I’m a true pushover and mustered up the strength to go, because I met Peter that night. I still cry every time I think about that day and my sweet cousin watching over me. It was truly one of the worst and then the best days of my life. 💔❤️ Peter and I didn’t chat that first night after a brief introduction but the following day I met up with the group again at a bonfire. We shared a laugh over the fact that my sweet little sister wore only a leather jacket to an outdoor occasion in Minnesota in the winter. Peter had generously gone to find an extra sweatshirt for her so she wouldn’t perish in the cold but couldn’t track her down again. [She did survive.] Anyway, we got to chatting right then and there and it basically continued for the next week with small breaks to eat and sleep. 😋 Then a quick goodbye as he left Minnesota for Maryland, followed by days and months of texting and calling and Skype and lots of trips between Maryland and Minnesota ...and then two years later, a wedding ...and then bam 💥 ...three kids and 7 years. 🤔🙃😉♥️ #minimalistmom #monochromemom #artistmom #artmom #momlife #organization #efficiency #monmo #babywardrobe #babyart #babyessentials #babygiftbox #newborngiftbox

As a follow-up to earlier: the no-spend year from Nov 2015 - Nov 2016 went well. There were expenses that came up unexpectedly, but unexpected expenses are expected, right? 😏 We caved a couple of times for non-necessities (but truly minimal, whew) and it was REALLYYYYYY hard to stick to in general. We didn't totally pay off our student loans, but we couldn't have if we gave 100% off our annual income to it, tbh. However, we DID tackle a huge chunk of them and came to be very prepared and motivated to tackle the rest. 🥳⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I learned how to go shopping with friends and walk out of a store (or all of them) with nothing. Why is that so awkward? I learned how to determine the difference between wants and needs. There's a HUGE gray area, isn't there? I learned how to be okay with giving up some pride and independence for the overall and long-term goals of our family unit, and just buy the stinking groceries and feel okay about it! And I learned that with a big specific goal, we can make some cool things happen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now I want to know! Have you done a no-spend period? How did it go for you? Back when we had our first baby, my husband was working on getting his Master's degree and I was fresh out of four years. We rented a small one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Baltimore and had dreams of moving closer to friends and family an hour away. We decided I'd stay home with our daughter until we relocated to avoid putting down more roots. Soooooo, that meant single-income, student loans, new baby.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Naturally, as a stay-at-home-mom, I was in charge of the buying: food, clothing, baby stuff, all of it... and I struggled with having my own student loan payments, not bringing in income, and spending more. [Side note: my husband did not care. 😜] I had buyer's remorse even buying groceries. So I made a plan.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'd heard of people doing a no-spend month (or 3) where they don't buy anything except groceries for a specific amount of time. It was a pretty cool idea, except I noticed people I knew who did it just bought a bunch of stuff before the no-spend period started & then picked back up to normal spending afterward. I needed something bigger. I wanted to do something that was drastic, lasted longer and taught me life-long lessons.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I decided: It's a big goal and I have nothing to lose. I'll do a year. I did some research and outlined the parameters:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️goal: pay down student loans⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️consumables allowed (food/toilet paper/basic toiletries)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️gifts allowed (intentional and modest)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️social activities allowed (host dinners/coffee with a friend/etc.) [friends > budget. lol]⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️travel allowed to see friends/family, no vacation type⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️approved list of future purchases that year: 1) next stage car seat for daughter, 2) clothes for growing daughter as needed, & 3) belt for husband *actual full list 😂- did not buy the belt⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ◾️start date: Jan 1, 2016 ... No, actually scratch the start date & start today to avoid pre-spending: Nov 2, 2015

We just cancelled our Amazon Prime membership a week ago! Eek! We’ve been Amazon users for 10+ years. (Remember when that’s where you’d go to buy college textbooks? ...or did that just age me?)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was one of those things where if you asked me a week earlier how I felt about Amazon and Jeff Bezos, I’d say, “They’re doing something right; I’m on board; I love it!” ..... Wellllll, then as a family we decided to take drastic steps to budget in anticipation for building our family home soon. It’s a big cost and decision and we want to make sure we’re good to go. I want them to cherish and be thankful for all the things they have, but not become too attached to things or hang onto things unnecessarily. Of course it’s so easy to get rid of broken toys or those with missing parts, but even those in nice shape... it’s much better to pass them on to someone who’ll get use out of them rather than having them sit on a shelf! Life along Blossom Lane. ▪️ My husband switched jobs recently, so we moved. It’s an hour outside of Baltimore, a farm complete with boarded cows and sheep in more rural area, overlooking fields and water. We’re closer to the majority of our friends and my husband’s parents... a dream we’ve been holding onto since before we got married almost 7 years ago. These months have flown by. 🖤 6 month old baby, Kindergartener starting in a couple weeks. It feels so chaotic in the day-to-day but the small moments like this jolt me. 👆🏼 “Whoa girl, stop for a second and breathe this in! These littles don’t stay little forever.” I haven’t been very active on here lately but being my best self for my kids and husband has meant taking a little step back from my small biz, social media, the news and this phone. We followed the intense heat wave from Minnesota this last week/weekend back home to Maryland! This weather has been some 2020 type ISH. We were camping when a tornado missed us by a few miles, some of my family had lightening run across their feet and give them a good shock and we spent a good few hours huddled in the cabin (20 people and 3 dogs) watching the storm’s eerie intensity over the lake. I usually kinda like thunderstorms but I’m deathly afraid of tornados and strong winds. And just like that, my newborn is in a 6-9 month capsule! (I mean it was JUST February, right?? 😜) We took off to Minnesota and Wisconsin for a couple weeks to use up the rest of my husband’s paternity leave before it expired. We brought a pretty helpless 4.5-ish month old baby there and came back with a rolling everywhere, sitting, yelling, giggling, TOOTHY grin of a kid. Love me some good contrast. BTW, this outfit has been AMAZING. It fits so incredibly well, looks so nice on boys and girls, quality 2-way zipper, and it fits for a LONG time! My boy is starting to be in 6-9 month clothes and he’s continuing to wear this outfit in 0-3 months!! A customer gave feedback that this was her favorite for her girl too, commenting that it’s fit before and after the size stated (she got a 3-6 box). We have a beach day planned, rain or shine. I finally got a bit of time to myself and crossed off some items on my massive to-do list. One of those: I finished my box of mending, including sewing up the piece of my daughter’s old gnarly bulky baby blanket I cut off and saved for her memory box. I’ve been interested to see if my baby will be intensely scared of people when we finally go out again. This little guy is nearly 3.5 months and he hasn’t met most of our family nor the friends we used to see on a weekly basis! I know it’s normal to start to have some stranger danger at 4-6 months but this might be next level! Those with babies, how are you feeling? I’m a blogger now guys! I’m kidding, I’m kidding. But I did write a post on organizing printed photographs. A post on scanning photos is coming next. I was trying to write one all-encompassing post on digitizing photos, but it felt messy and confusing... so I split it up into a couple parts: organizing first, then scanning and uploading, etc. (and I’ll have one on scanner settings, too). When I started this project for myself, I couldn’t find simple clear steps online, so I decided to dive in and figure out an efficient system and then write a tutorial myself. A slight grimace for the uncertainty the world holds right now? Anyone else on a roller coaster of emotions as the days go by? I keep getting worried, then thinking everything will be fine, then having a hard time not seeing my friends and family and doing my usual postpartum rituals, then feeling guilty for feeling bad when so many other people are being affected so much more by the disease directly or its effect on the economy, jobs, etc. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Personally, it’s been kinda tough to navigate postpartum life. It’s OKAY. By God’s grace, we’ve managed here for the most part. Some days get a bit hairy. After my second child, I felt like I had enough tools in my tool belt to tackle taking care of a third baby, my family and my mental health. Of course, with this strange turn of events, most of my specific coping mechanisms can’t happen... and getting sleep is harder with three kids than two, turns out. 😏 Here’s what specifically has worked for me previously but I need to find alternatives for: 1) Adequate sleep. House can wait... if kids are fed and in a safe space, naps need to happen. We had a tree fall across the front of our house this morning, blocking our entrance like an extra quarantine measure. It happened moments after I told my husband how I couldn’t sleep with this wind we had, worried a branch would come through our window any moment. He assured me the wind sounds worse than it really is. This reassurance was followed by a loud thud and scrape across the house, and the tree that had been waving violently moments before was no longer in sight... just a few measly branches sticking up at the bottom of our 2nd story bedroom window. We stood there in shock for a bit and then ran down to access the damage. Luckily, only a couple gutters were slightly bent, as well as our already-on-their-way-our front hedge bushes. After all the excitement wore down, I realized I’d left my eager barely-3-year-old holding the baby on our bed. I’m a rural Midwest plains girl transplanted to east coast city life and I’m loving it. I stay at home with my two kids, 5 and 2, where I stay busy with them, art and creative projects, and this capsule wardrobe passion project venture. ▪️ • I love simplification and efficiency, organization, Marie Kondo, white and black, a good crispy vegetable stir fry, getting deep into a drawing and forgetting about the world around me, and snuggles from little arms. I’m pretty indoorsy but if there’s a good friend to join me outside, I’ll oblige. We spend nearly every weekend away from home (for the last 6+ years) and it’s been good for me (I’ve learned a lot), but it’s also been hard to do. I’m pretty uptight about my own productivity and hate that about myself, but productivity = happiness for me so I try to accept that it’s just how God made me. 😆 I can be pretty awkward irl but I love people a LOT for whoever they are. ▪️Did you know there’s a multi-year backstory on how MONMO capsule came to be? • I would get so overwhelmed by the shopping process every time my kids grew another size: thrift shopping, online shopping, trying to trek through stores with my tots in tow, and then somehow having too much of some things and not enough of others, adorable pieces with no outfit to which they go, ill-fitting items, poor quality items, then piles of laundry, stuffed drawers... you might know the drill. • When my firstborn was 3 months old, I was already becoming fed up with the mess. I wanted to be able to buy a set of clothes for my daughter that was simple, looked cute, fit well, was of good quality, and supported a few mama owned-small shops. ... Crickets! There was nothing out there. • In my search, though, I discovered the world of "capsule wardrobes," a term coined in the 1970s by a London boutique owner named Susie Faux. She defined the capsule wardrobe as "a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces," for women. I decided to put it to the test, baby style. Through the next few years, I tried various methods of shopping for my daughter, and then my second baby, a little boy. I based the kids' wardrobes around good-quality unisex items so I could continue using them with my next babies, then added gender specific and fun pieces to finish it out. • This last fall, after 3 years of learning and testing and thinking, I started telling friends about my capsule wardrobe idea, and with lots of help and encouragement, I officially started this project. Since then, I have been polling moms near and far to learn about their favorite baby clothing items to put together my first mini capsule wardrobes, available for sale now. • These first wardrobes are unisex monochrome and come in sizes ranging from newborn to 12 months. I have gathered the perfect mixture of clothing items, packaged them up and have a limited quantity left ready to ship. The next step is a larger restock, coming soon! 🖤

I haven’t shared much about me here yet so here’s some very random tidbits about me you could probably live without, brought to you by the #socialcuratorchallenge: I’m Tonja and, 1. I hate cold shoulders. Figuratively, yes, but more importantly, literally. I probably spend 75% of my shower putting one shoulder under the steamy water, and then switching when the other gets too cold, and plan to design a future shower of ours in a way that solves that cold shoulder problem. 2. I’m a self-preservation 3 on the enneagram which is ‘The Achiever.’ The SP3 means I work hard to achieve a sense of security (for myself to be self-sufficient and for others), I’m outwardly calm and organized but have anxieties underneath. I like to solve problems and get things done in a high quality way. I’m concerned about my image and get value from what other people think of me but absolutely hate that I care about that. I have a high need to be high-qual and succeed in everything I do but fear being a failure in all of my existence. Also, I want to bring others up and support them to achieve as well. 3. I can swim and do sometimes but I’m scared of water and rarely enter the ocean. Basically only do if it’s calm and clear (and warm) ... Like I haven’t gone into the ocean by us past my waist for sure, if even that far. 4. I used to read constantly but now I’ve read only 5 full books since graduating college 5.5 years ago: a Louis L’amour book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo(Konmari), Mindhunter by John Douglas, and 2 sci fi (Awakening by C.M. Aitken and The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson). And have started Daring Greatly by Brené Brown (like a WHILE ago, oops).
